In addition to the standard planets, asteroids and hypothetical planets, Solar Maps also allows you to include fixed stars or other astronomical points in your map display and charts. The program is supplied with a set of 36 commonly used stars, but you can also select from a much larger supplied set of about 300 stars, or even enter your own star data if you prefer. In order to use fixed stars, you must first open a star file, and then select which stars you wish to display. Solar Maps is limited to displaying 36 fixed stars at any one time. If you attempt to open a star file which has more than 36 stars in it, then only the first 36 stars will be read in, and the other stars ignored. To use stars other than the first 36 in the file, you must use the fixed stars editor to move the required stars to the beginning of the star file, or to copy the required stars into a new, smaller star file.
